Time at Dale: Kevin joined Rochdale from Everton Youth Academy on 6th July 2000 and is always remembered for match against Fulham in the League Cup (Worthington Cup) 2nd round on 11th September 2001 when we came on in the 69th minute proceeding to score twice in the 2-2 draw before Dale lost 5-6 on penalties after extra time had failed to provide a winner. Fulham Website “Fulham midfielder Sean Davis was at fault with the goal that brought Rochdale level in the 73rd minute. He lost concentration and then possession, allowing Townson to advance on goal, the young striker, only on the park five minutes, showed a cool head to rifle a shot from the edge of the area beyond keeper Maik Taylor. Fulham were rocked again 12 minutes into the first period of extra time when Townson put Rochdale ahead after Clive Platt’s shot came back off the post after a fine build up and Townson was on hand to rattle in the rebound”
He was highlighted again as one of Dale’s brightest stars after a 5-4 victory over York City 5th February 2002 BBC Rochdale-Rochdale’s aim is to leave behind the basement division for the first time in 28 years but regardless of what happens this season, the future looks bright thanks to an outstanding crop of young talent at Spotland. The homely Lancashire club might seem an unlikely destination for a clutch of the Nationwide League’s brightest young things but the scouts clearly know where it is and are beating a constant path to watch John Hollins’ tyros keep Dale in the thick of the Third Division promotion frame. John Hollins is impressed by his young stars with three teenagers and a 20-year-old taking the attack to York in the second-half of Tuesday night’s thrilling 5-4 victory. Three of Dale’s goals came from 18 year old Kevin Townson and 19 year old Lee McEvilly. Townson was denied a hat-trick by the post and 18 year old substitute Patrick McCourt also hit the woodwork, having laid on Townson’s second goal with a sublime pass moments after coming off the bench. Townson, plucked from non league football 18 months ago, now has 14 goals to his name this season and recently received a call up to England’s under 20 squad. John Hollins commented “Kevin Townson plays off McEvilly and they are both young men, Townson is 18, McEvilly is 19, McCourt is 18, Matt Doughty is 20 and Steve Jones is just 25, the future is very encouraging here at Rochdale”
International career? Kevin represented England Under 19’s in 2002
